28-29 Jersey
City, New Jersey
The
five hour journey through Long Island Sound to New York City was a new experience
for Dave. On a previous trip to our
marina in Jersey City, Dave had cruised with us up the East River to Rikers
Island but he had not made the northern entrance to the city from the
sound. Interesting lighthouses, former
historic buildings, La Guardia Airport, and small marinas add to the scenery of
the awesome approaching skyline of Manhattan.
Cruising down the East River with its strong current can be a challenge
as a boat can be swept into the stone walls lining the banks or numerous
hazards in the water. The view is
magnificent as the United Nations and other iconic buildings and familiar bridges
are clearly visible.
Docking
at Liberty Landing Marina was easy. Our
assigned slip is adjacent to the park with a great view of Manhattan from the
aft deck. Liberty Landing offers many
amenities, including two excellent restaurants and a view of the Statue of
Liberty and Ellis Island.
Dave
left the boat on Saturday to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and revisit some
favorite places. He enjoys photographing
people and scenes that seem commonplace to most. Adept in capturing shadows and unusual angles,
he adds dramatic effects and suggested meanings to his photos.
I arrived on Saturday afternoon after a hurried five day visit to Texas to attend meetings, visit briefly with family, and see a few friends. I was glad to escape the intense heat of Fort Worth and return to the boat. It was somewhat humbling to find that Dave and David had navigated successfully the trip from Boston without my expertise!
